Washing your face 101

Have you ever wondered if you’re washing your face the right way? You’re not alone. I mean, how hard could it be right?  Splash some water, apply your cleanse and rinse! Well, there’s actually a right way to do it and how you wash your face makes all the difference!

What is cleansing your face? It’s usually the first stage in a skincare routine and the purpose of cleansing is to wash away dirt, dead skin cells, makeup, sunscreen and anything else that might clog your pores.  It’s done through using a cleanser,

which are skincare products formulated to clean our skin and they come in different forms from powders to gel. In addition, depending on the formulation, cleansers can also be used to treat certain skin conditions so it’s important to pick the right cleanser for your skin type and lifestyle.

So how do you cleanse the right way? Here are a few simple tips from us:

  1. Cleanse every night for at least 20 seconds

Whether you wear makeup or not, at the end of the day your skin has accumulated the day’s oil, sweat and pollution (which can cause skin damage and irritations).  We recommend the Japanese beauty double cleansing method at night! It starts with an oil cleanser followed up by a gentle facial cleanser to really give you that deep but hydrating cleanse your skin will thank you for.  If a double cleanse isn’t for you, gentle cleanse for at least 20 seconds, massaging all the yuck out of your skin!

  1. Use a gentle facial cleanser in the morning

Cleansing in the morning might not be something for everyone but it’s a must do for us!  As clean as you may be, at night as you’re tossing and turning, bacteria from your saliva and oils from your hair are easily transferred to your face, let alone your bedsheets and pillow case.  When cleansing in the morning opt for a gentle cleanser, we love using foaming cleansers that hydrates the skin.

  1. Cleanse with the right water temperature

A hot bath sounds great but it does dry out the skin and the same goes for the face.  So, it’s important to use lukewarm water to wash your face!

  1. Cleanse as often as you feel necessary

Ideally, the rule goes, wash your face in the morning and at night.  However, it really depends on your skin and what it needs.  For some, washing your face twice a day is too much on their skin, for others, it’s a wash in the AM, after workouts and at night.  In addition, some may only need a splash of water or micellar water in the morning followed by  a gentle cleanser at night.  On the other hand, some may need a cleanser the the morning and night.  Listen to your skin!
